Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Newcastle Borough Council and the North Staffordshire Landlords Association are hosting a conference on 8 June to help landlords keep up-to-date with property rental legislation.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council said that the North Staffordshire Landlord Conference would also give people the opportunity to network with like-minded people and share any housing-related problems and solutions they may have.
The event is aimed at private landlords, buy-to-let investors and letting agents and takes place on 8 June at the Kings Hall in Stoke from 9am to 5pm, with tickets costing £25.
The conference is the first of its kind to be organised by the Landlord Accreditation Scheme – and is a joint venture between Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Newcastle Borough Council and the North Staffordshire Landlords Association.
A number of expert speakers will take part in the conference, with talks on how to avoid getting caught out when setting up a tenancy and initial checks landlords should carry out, as well as information regarding Section 8 and 21 notices and possession proceedings.
Representatives from both councils will talk about important changes in legislation affecting landlords, such as Local Housing Allowance, Universal Credit, civil penalties, licensing and rogue traders.
Staffordshire Police will be advising landlords on what to look out for regarding criminal activity in their properties, as well as anti-social behaviour and closure orders.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s director of housing and customer services, Carl Brazier, said:
“The private rented sector is an important part of the city – it houses a large number of residents and we want everyone to have the opportunity to live in warm, safe homes.
“To do this, we need to increase the number of good quality, professional landlords – and this conference aims to help our landlords by providing all the necessary support and information.
“The event aims to give landlords an expert insight into the raft of recent legislation being introduced – as well as helping them avoid the risk of legal action.
“The day is also a great opportunity for networking and we have a number of trade stands attending providing a range of information about their services – I’d urge all landlords to come along and see how we can support them.”
