Hounslow Council still supports Dubs Amendment to bring refugee children to Britain (20 February 2017)

Hounslow Council has said it supports other London councils’ responses to the government’s decision to suspend the Dubs Amendment under which unaccompanied refugee children were allowed into Britain.

The council said that it is important that the government “doesn’t turn its back on the situation” when so many children fleeing conflict are in vulnerable situations.

Hounslow was one of the London boroughs which welcomed several unaccompanied children under 18 years of age from Calais in 2016 –
including some arriving under the Dubs Amendment.

Children arriving in the UK arrive via Lunar House in Croydon, one of the centres for UK Visa and Immigration. They are transferred to other London boroughs – such as Hounslow – who are then responsible for looking after them.

Leader of Hounslow Council, Councillor Steve Curran, said that it was “very disappointing” to hear the government’s announcement that the commitment to the Dubs Amendment is ending.

“Here at Hounslow Council, we have helped and taken in unaccompanied children under this agreement – and our staff from children’s services and social workers have worked hard not only to take in these children and either place them with relatives or in foster care, but also to ensure their education and health matters are met.

We will continue to be ready to welcome these vulnerable children, but we need the necessary funding to make sure we can meet the needs that will provide the better life they are seeking.”
