A monitoring checklist by the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) has been updated across all five sections, including new questions on right to work in the UK, in response to feedback from scheme monitors last year.

CCS said that scheme monitors, associate members and other contractors and clients had requested “more focus” on the subject of illegal workers in the checklist.

It is thought that increased Home Office monitoring of illegal workers in the UK has resulted in increasing numbers of Home Office raids on construction sites.

The Home Office launched Operation Magnify in October 2015 – a UK-wide campaign which aims to crack down on companies employing and exploiting illegal workers.

Chief executive of CCS, Edward Hardy, said:

“With over 18,000 monitoring visits to sites, companies and suppliers every year, the Scheme is the central part of instigating change to help raise standards and improve the image of the construction industry.

“The Scheme’s monitoring checklists are the backbone to effecting this change – and we are pleased to be introducing greater focus on helping to address the critical issues of tackling illegal working in construction.”
